The second day walking the Wangapeka Track was a nice short day of only 8 kilometers with another 200 meters gentle rise during the day.

Which was great news as I felt OK in the morning but I am still building my general fitness after a tiring day yesterday.

The highlight of the day was when I was crossing a swing bridge (which I enjoy anyway) when a very rare Whio flew right underneath me! Very cool – I have seen a few Whio in the water but to see one flying and directly below me was simply the bomb.

The day was spent following the Wangapeka River North Branch until we reached Stone Hut which was situated is a type of picnic area with a number of places where tents can be pitched. It was the sand-flies which keep you inside which is a nuisance.

The afternoon was spent resting, reading and playing backgammon and the fairy tale card game.
