Urewera Tramp - Drive to Lake Waikaremoana
Julianne, Robin and I are heading away for a five day tramp, which will be Robin’s only second tramp.
We are heading to the Urewera’s where the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is located. Julianne and I have walked the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk over 15 years ago but there are a number of other walks in the same forest but without the without all the busy bustle of the a Great Walk and also a lot cheaper which we are heading to.
So on Sunday the 24th of January we were all packed up, with Luke safely dropped off up at my Mum’s house in Leigh and we were away in the car by 9.30am. With all the new fancy motorway’s it was not long before we were in Cambridge for lunch at 12.
Robin and I enjoyed driving down the new Huntly by-pass as we had cycled up and down this new motorway by-pass around Huntly back in February 2020. That bike ride was a long 10 kilometer’s up and down the Taupiri Range for young Robin.
In only another hour after Cambridge we were at Rotorua thinking this is going really well but I had forgotten what the road to Lake Waikaraemoana is like; a long windy gravel road that took hours. We ended up arriving at the fancy camp-ground at 5pm, way later than I expected with Julianne having motion sickness and me with a headache.
The Lake Waikaremoana holiday park is impressive with everything setup for fishing and of course Robin and I had a good explore around the camp ground.
We found our cabin and we settled in for an early night after a game of ball throwing with Robin and of course a family card game.
